I presume you’re wanting to know how the first Strangefish gig went? After all the build up has been huge from my point of view. About 6 months since I joined the band and we’re doing our first big gig.
Ok so the arrival time was rather early, 2pm, as is always the case with these things. Bob was later than the rest of us but soundcheck went incredibly smoothly. We ran through my most nerve wracking song “Progress in Reverse” and then disappeared off the stage for John Hackett and then Encircled to do their sound checks.
At 9:30 we took to the stage for my first gig with the new band. I can honestly say I’ve not been as nervous to take a stage in years.
After last night’s IQ gig in Bury at The Met, which I have to say was stupendously good (even if they didn’t play Out of Nowhere) and arriving home at half past midnight; I was awoken at 7:30am for a Strangefish rehearsal.
With lasers and songs from Ever buzzing in my mind (did I mention I love lasers) I headed to Bury again.
The rehearsal studio, Redwall, apparently was used by IQ on a number of occasions. The guy managing it told me that when he noticed my IQ hoodie.
I was first there, but I loaded in, set up, and then helped the rest of the guys load in.
Once we were all set up we commenced rehearsals and went through about 10 songs in total, some of them twice. We also caught a new photo to get us going with the forthcoming gigs.
I’m not going to divulge much more about the material we did, as I’d love you too see a gig sometime soon!
I can say, though, that Oceans Deep sounded great!
I’ve joined a third band! It was about a month ago when it happened but it started with a message and phonecall out of the blue… And ten minutes later I’m in a band!
A band I’ve followed for a long time have asked me to join. I feel very honoured, especially with how at the end of Manning I felt really low and quite depressed.
Last week’s FIA course in Bolton gave me the first chance to have a band meeting with them. I was staying in a hotel…
Doing a course…
Facing a boring night ahead… Until I mentioned to the guys about it. They couldn’t wait.
At about 7 they arrived at the hotel.
We drunk… ate… and made merry.
Gigs and rehearsals were discussed, and I officially became the newest member of the band Strangefish
Who’d have thought all those years ago when I bought this album for the first time that just 25 years later you’d be able to day “OK, Google; play Across The Water by Jadis” and you’d get the album streamed without even pressing a single button?
It’s one of my favourite albums of all time. Track 6, The World on Your Side speaks volumes to me.
Google reminded me that I was on tour with Manning doing two gigs over in the Netherlands and Belgium.
So many good memories, although just after this amazing tour was the beginning of the end for me. Manning started to fall apart after this tour. Chris and Kev left; Steve the flute player quit to concentrate on his own band Molly Bloom, and a new old guitarist came in who I didn’t get on with; then my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer a few months later.
Mostly Autumn – The Spirit of Autumn Past
Still their finest album, even after all these years.
Just a bit of video.
It was a good festival, but not particularly well attended which was such a shame.
